Youth Works keeping busy | Print |  E-mail

Youth Works took time to hang out and play with kids at DreamCatcher Park as part of their kids program. Every week a new Youth Works group comes to town and holds a kids program. Other members of the youth group go out into the community to help do some repair work on area homes. These individuals come from a church group and volunteer their time to help others.

Every summer, youth volunteers come to the Cass Lake area by means of a national, Christian-affiliated outreach and ministry program called Youth Works.
This year is no different, and participants have been busily working in the area to offer assistance to community home repairs projects as well as to provide the local youth with fun activities.
The Youth Works program attracts high school volunteers from across the country, each of whom spend a week at their designated project site.
Roughly 70 Youth Works participants travel to Cass Lake each week, providing the community with a broad range of service.
Youth Works facilitates work projects that focus on community betterment, a kids’ club that provides area youth with fun activities and a sports camp for some of the older local kids.
Kim Louvin, coordinator for the work projects program, said that their efforts to help local community members with home improvements have been extremely successful this summer.
“The program is designed to assist those community members who may not have the time or resources to complete these types of projects,” she said.
Because each group of Youth Works volunteers is new every week, the energy and motivation to provide such a service is essentially endless, Louvin said.
Over the course of the past summer weeks, Youth Works has helped numerous Cass Lake area residents repaint their houses and garages as well as painting local business and government buildings like J & L Oil and the Tribal Council office.
In addition, the crew did some work in the community gardens, within the Cass Lake-Bena schools and Norway Beach.
Because the purpose of the program is to build relationships through service, Youth Works has also sponsored a community cookout that has been held at Dreamcatcher Park on Wednesday evenings.
Louvin credited Cass Lake Mayor Wayne LaDuke and the Tribal Council for helping find projects for Youth Works participants to work on, and also thanked the school district for housing the volunteers at the middle school.
“It’s just been a really great experience all around,” said Louvin. “The community has been extremely receptive and our volunteers have been blown away by how even small things can make a difference.”
